To speak, read, write and understand another language is to begin understanding other people and this understanding is increasingly recognised as crucial for harmony and prosperity in the world today. At RBSC, students can study French, Hebrew, Italian and Russian. Students of French will learn to understand, speak and write on the following topics: - My family and myself

Students learn through the language. French classes are taught by highly qualified and enthusiastic teachers and feature the use of song, French stories and other authentic communicative activities. Course structure allows French beginners to join French classes. Communicative classroom learning is extended by the use of computer software. Students have the opportunity to exchange emails with friends from French-speaking countries, build a variety of IT tasks in French and use authentic reading material from French websites. TOP The Modern Hebrew curriculum focuses on the four major language-acquisition skills listening, speaking, reading and writing through a variety of genres ranging from classical Hebrew text to Israeli music, poetry, historical documents and the arts. Students are provided with a sequential Hebrew language curriculum of challenging and relevant content. The curriculum seeks to create a community of Hebrew speakers who are able to read a Hebrew book, participate in a serious discussion or casual conversation in Hebrew, read an article in an Israeli newspaper and write a letter to the editor in Hebrew. It is based on the belief that mastery of Hebrew will promote students sense of identity through understanding of their history, culture and tradition. TOP I did it for years but I cant speak a word of it! To avoid any repetition of this sense of failure in this generation RBSC offers Italian courses with a learning guarantee. The course is based on the performance of a work. Students are guided by a rubric to code their presentations. Peer assessment is practised at the end of each term from week 7. Students also create a portfolio of work that reflects life in contemporary Italy. TOP Russian is one of the major languages of the world. It is also one of the official languages of the United Nations. In a recent census, 153 million people listed Russian as their mother tongue and another 61 million indicated that they spoke it fluently as a second language. At RBSC, students may begin their study of Russian in Year 7.There are no prerequisities for this level 1 course. It is designed for both background speakers of Russian (students who speak Russian but have difficulty reading and writing) and for students who want to study Russian as a foreign language. It is an introductory course to Russian language and culture. Russian level 2 for Year 8 students is a sequential course continuing from Russian level 1. The course is designed for both background speakers of Russian (students who speak Russian but have difficulty reading and writing) and for students who have completed the Level 1 Russian course and want to study Russian as a foreign language. It involves extensive vocabulary building, intermediate grammar and a deep knowledge of the usage of language in Russian culture. Both courses focus on an understanding of language and how it works to serve social purposes (discussing career choices, health problems, ordering food and drinks, talking about pastimes and activities, daily routines and holidays; expressing opinions, wishes and emotions, stating preferences and so on). The courses develop listening, reading, speaking and writing skills in different text types (informal conversations, personal letters, personal and commonsense descriptions, expositions, posters, advertisements, post cards, timetables and personal recounts). They provide an orientation to aspects of everyday life in Russia and give students an opportunity to talk, read, listen, write and view diverse material relating to the above topics.
