At Rose Bay Secondary College 30% of our student population have been identified as intellectually gifted and academically talented via the NSW selective school schools unit.
In each of the years, from year 7 to year 10, these students have been grouped into 2 academically ‘selective’ classes. ‘Selective’ classes provide opportunities for the intellectually gifted student to interact and learn with other ‘like-minded’ students in an academically challenging and stimulating environment.
These ‘selective’ classes complete their curriculum alongside the mainstream classes. The courses studied share a common curriculum but are taught in a way that challenges our intellectually gifted and academically talented students and allows them to fulfil their potential in all curriculum areas.
Teaching strategies such as pre-testing and curriculum compacting allow selective students to demonstrate their core academic achievements at a faster rate. This creates more time for stimulating and challenging extension and enrichment opportunities such as independent learning and research, acceleration, negotiated curriculum, higher order critical thinking and specific unit enrichment.
Cross-curriculum programs allow for students to work cooperatively, individually or in groups making connections in their learning between different key learning areas.
Our teachers are trained to provide courses that are more demanding in content and activities that cater for individual learning needs. Classes are busy and stimulating with high expectations to ensure students learn and achieve. Students enjoy the challenges of academic excellence in a school setting that caters for students of all abilities.

TOP Our school actively promotes the Quality Teaching Framework of the NSW Department of Education and Training. This framework promotes opportunity for students who display gifted and talented qualities in one or more areas. Class programs provide opportunities to develop these gifts and the inclusion of selective stream students in many elective classes creates a rich learning environment.
Curriculum structures provide the opportunity for greater student choice of electives to meet individual needs and interests. Electives offered as semester or year courses promote student engagement through stimulating content and challenge in academic, cultural and sporting domains.
The provision of demanding Board of Studies courses including key extension subjects allows students to excel and realise their HSC goals.
Opportunity for participation in competitions sponsored by universities such as the English, maths, science, geography, chemistry and computer competitions allow for student engagement in wider forums.
Writing competitions, public speaking, debating, poetry recitation, programs with primary schools, Tournament of Minds, art and photographic competitions allow for co-curricular enrichment.
Performance nights showcase drama, dance and music ensembles, while musical productions and rock eisteddfods enhance student involvement.
Student leadership through the SRC, house structures and student forums promote civic responsibility and the importance of community.
Our schools culture of success and its responsive curriculum cater for gifted and talented students in a climate of respect where learning is a valued, positive and rewarding experience. TOP |
