Our History

Rose Bay Secondary College was formed following the amalgamation of Vaucluse High School and Dover Heights High School.

The Dover Heights building originally opened in 1946 as a domestic science girls high school that was a showpiece of secondary education in New South Wales.

In 1965, the name was changed to Dover Heights Girls High School and in 1982 the school became coeducational when it amalgamated with Dover Heights Boys High School.

Vaucluse High School began life in 1960 as Vaucluse Boys High School. It became coeducational in 1981 and went on to be recognised as a Centre of Excellence for Senior Studies in New South Wales.

The name Rose Bay Secondary College was chosen following community consultation. It enrolled its first combined year 7 intake in 2002 and the college was officially proclaimed in 2003.

From 2003 until term1, 2006, the college existed on two campuses based on the old school sites. In term 2, 2006, the physical amalgamation finally took place historically uniting the school onto one campus.

The magnificent new facilities are the result of the strong support of the community working with the NSW Department of Education and Training to secure a proud future for public education in the northern peninsula of Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

The new additions extend over 7 storeys and include a gymnasium/school hall that can cater for 1200 students, a library of similar capacity and a suite of specialist areas including fitness laboratories, music and music practice rooms, a broadcasting studio, multimedia facilities, senior studies and film and video facilities.

Ours is the only high school in NSW that offers film and video courses to industry standard. To this end, the building of a state-of-the-art film studio is an integral part of the building program. The need for such a facility is clearly demonstrated by the success of our Screen students in open film festival competitions.

The refurbishment of existing buildings brought them to a standard that complemented the new facilities. Computer technology is available throughout the college.

Landscaping of the site allows students to use the extensive open area and recreational spaces to their best advantage.
